I first dived in Greece after my A levels when I was 17- it was with a 2 bit crappy dive centre - I looked at the photo that was taken the other day and all we were given was a tank and a reg- no guage, no bcd and no suit!!!!! We were just told to wear a t-shirt! Anyway, it was one guy and about 12 students, and VERY dodgy, but I loved the experience of looking up and seeing the water surface, and of being in a different world that was so quiet and relaxed. So, I made it my aim to learn.

Last year my first stop was Fiji as I thought that would be the coolest place to do my OW because my ultimate aim was to dive on the Great Barrier Reef which I did. The rest is history!!

I also went to Indonesia where I was a bit lonely, so I went and did my Advanced to meet people and do something further that I enjoyed!!

History of the word Scuba:

The word SCUBA was originally formed in 1952 as an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. An acronym, normally punctuated by full stops, would be written S.C.U.B.A.  In 1973 the word scuba was first recorded as a verb and is in use to this day.

S.C.U.B.A. equipment was first successfully tested in 1943 by a French naval lieutenant, Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
